About the Original Compaction and Flaking Machines
Allis-Chalmers Corporation was a leading producer of industrial equipment, such as roller mills for corn flakes, power turbines, tractors, and engines. It developed the industrial flaking mill in the late 19th Century and the first roll compactor in the 1960s. Today, Ludman Industries continues the legacy of Allis-Chalmers Mining and Food-Grade Divisions, about building state of the art compaction and size reduction machines.
About Our History
Beginning in 1847 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, Allis-Chalmers originated as Reliance Works, a pioneer iron foundry and machine shop, that worked heavily in regional supply of milling equipment for the lumber and flour industries. The company was later purchased by Edward P. Allis in 1861, forming the Edward P. Allis & Company Reliance Works. The company extended its reach into mining and grain processing equipment, as well as about developing steam engines and rollers for the steel industry.
The name Allis-Chalmers Company was officially formed in 1901, through the merging of three other major machinery manufacturers. It extended into one of the most innovative companies in the world throughout the greater part of the 20th Century. Some notable products made by Allis-Chalmers include, steam-pumping and water-pumping machines, autogenous grinding mills, hydraulic and hydroelectric turbine equipment, gyratory crushers, multiple V-belt drives, and the first rubber-tired tractor.
Ludman Industries formed in a similar way as a machine shop in 1968, under the direction of Louis Jakober, known as Ludman Machine Company. It did a significant amount of work for Allis-Chalmers, especially in mining and food-grade machinery, eventually leading to it later purchasing those product lines in 1986.
Ludman was re-named Ludman Industries by President and CEO James P. Lenahan in 2010 to reflect the company’s goal of providing total process solutions for the mining, metal, mineral, wastewater, chemical and food industries.
